How it works

How to revise with these GCSE flashcards

  1. Pick a subject and topic. Choose one topic to focus on, or All topics to mix them up. Foundation students can untick Higher tier, and Combined Science students can untick Triple science.
  2. Test yourself on each card. Read the question and say or write your answer before you turn the card over. Recalling it from memory is what makes it stick.
  3. Be honest about how it went. Tap Again, Hard, Good or Easy, the same four buttons Anki uses (or swipe right if you knew it and left if you didn’t, like Quizlet). Cards you got wrong come back later in the same session; cards you knew come back after a few days, then a week, then longer.
  4. Come back each day. The bar shows how many cards in your topic you know well. A little every day beats one long session the night before.
  5. Check yourself with a quiz. Ten multiple-choice questions with the answer explained, and a link so a friend can take the same quiz.

Four ways to revise

  • Flashcards. Flip and mark each card; smart repeat works out what you need to see again and when.
  • Quiz. Ten questions from your topic with four answers each, your score, and every missed card explained.
  • Daily 10. Ten questions a day for each subject, the same for everyone. Keep your streak going and share your score.
  • My cards. Type your own questions and answers into blank cards, then revise them with smart repeat or a quiz. They’re saved on your device, and you can save a copy to move them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are these GCSE flashcards free?
Yes. Every card, quiz, Daily 10 and your own card sets are free, with no sign-up, no email, no trial and nothing to pay at the end.
Which GCSE subjects are covered?
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English Literature and History, with 1,431 cards across 44 topics.
Which exam board do the flashcards follow?
They are written to follow the AQA GCSE (9-1) specifications, the most widely taken in England. Most of the content is the same for Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas, so the cards work for those boards too; check your own specification for any topics your board does differently.
Are there Foundation and Higher tier cards?
Yes. Cards that are only on the Higher tier are labelled Higher, and Foundation students can untick Higher tier to hide them. In the sciences, cards that are only in the separate (triple) science courses are labelled Triple, and Combined Science students can untick Triple science.
How does the smart repeat work?
It uses spaced repetition. After each card you say whether you knew it. Cards you did not know come back later in the same session; cards you knew come back after 1 day, then 3, 7, 16 and 35 days. That way you spend your time on the cards you find hard, which research on retrieval practice and spacing shows is one of the most effective ways to revise.
What is the Daily 10?
Ten multiple-choice questions a day for each subject, the same for everyone. Your first go counts, it keeps your revision streak going, and you can share your score as a row of green and red squares.
Can I quiz my friends?
Yes. After any quiz, tap WhatsApp, Messages or Copy link under Challenge a friend. Your friend gets exactly the same ten questions and sees whether they beat your score.
Can I make my own flashcards?
Yes. Open My cards and type a question and its answer into a blank card, with an optional note. Make as many sets as you like (for example one per subject or exam paper), then revise them with the same smart repeat, or quiz yourself once a set has at least four cards. They are saved on your device, and Save a copy lets you move them to another phone or computer.
Do the English Literature cards include quotations?
Yes for texts that are out of copyright, such as Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Christmas Carol, Jekyll and Hyde and the older anthology poems. For An Inspector Calls and the modern poems, the cards cover plot, characters, themes, context and the writer’s methods instead.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, on your device only. Your progress, settings and streak are stored in your browser, so they stay put on the same phone or computer. Nothing about you is uploaded and there is no account.
Who writes the cards?
Altto writes them from the GCSE specifications in plain English, and each subject is checked for accuracy before it goes live. If you spot a mistake, use the feedback box at the bottom of the page and we will fix it.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It works in your web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. You can add Altto Tests to your home screen so it opens like an app, but you don’t have to.
