About the test

How your typing speed is worked out

Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). To make words of different lengths fair, a “word” is counted as 5 characters, including spaces. So typing 300 correct characters in one minute is 60 WPM.

Your headline score only counts words you typed correctly, so rushing and making mistakes doesn’t pay. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, right or wrong, and accuracy is the share of your key presses that were the right letter. A big gap between raw and headline WPM means slowing down slightly would raise your score.

What is a good typing speed?

Large studies of 168,000 people typing on computers and 37,000 on phones (researchers at Aalto University and the University of Cambridge, 2018 and 2019) found an average of about 52 WPM on a keyboard and 36 WPM on a phone (36.2 WPM).

SpeedWhat it means
Under 25 WPMWarming up. Usual for people who type with a few fingers or are new to a keyboard.
25–44 WPMSteady. Around the average for phone typing.
45–64 WPMQuick. Around the average on a computer keyboard, and enough for most office jobs.
65–84 WPMFast. Faster than most people; typical of confident touch typists.
85–109 WPMVery fast. The speed of experienced typists and transcribers.
110+ WPMExceptional. Only a small minority of people type this fast.

Many jobs that list a typing speed ask for 35 to 50 WPM; data entry and transcription roles often ask for 60 or more. Accuracy matters as much as speed: employers usually expect 95% or better.

Learn the home rowRest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ; (the bumps on F and J help you find them without looking). Each finger then has its own keys.
Stop looking downLooking at the keys is the biggest brake on speed. It feels slower for a week or two, then much faster.
Accuracy firstFixing mistakes costs more time than typing slightly slower. Aim for 95% accuracy, then push the speed.
Little and oftenTen minutes a day beats an hour once a week. Retake this test every few days to see your progress.
Practise your slipsYour results list the words you got wrong. Type them a few times slowly; they are usually the same awkward letter pairs.
On a phone, use both thumbsTwo thumbs are much faster than one finger, and trusting autocorrect less often makes you more accurate.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this typing test free?
Yes. Your words per minute, accuracy and full results appear the moment the time runs out. There is no sign-up, no email and nothing to pay.
How is WPM calculated?
A word is counted as 5 characters, including spaces, so words of different lengths are fair. Your WPM is the number of characters you typed correctly, divided by 5, divided by the minutes of the test. Words with mistakes in them do not count towards your score.
What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?
WPM only counts words you typed correctly. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included. If your raw WPM is much higher than your WPM, slowing down a little to make fewer mistakes will raise your score.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 52 WPM is average on a computer keyboard and around 36 WPM on a phone, according to large studies by University of Cambridge and Aalto University researchers. 65 WPM or more is fast, and over 85 WPM is very fast.
What typing speed do jobs ask for?
Many office jobs ask for 35 to 50 WPM, while data entry, transcription and secretarial roles often ask for 60 WPM or more, usually with at least 95% accuracy.
How is accuracy worked out?
Accuracy is the share of your key presses that were the right letter in the right place. Fixing a mistake with backspace still counts the wrong key press, so accuracy reflects how cleanly you type, not just the final words.
Should I take the 1-minute or 30-second test?
The 1-minute test is the standard and gives the most reliable score. The 15- and 30-second tests are good for quick practice, but short tests are easier to have a lucky (or unlucky) run on.
Can I take the typing test on my phone?
Yes. It works with your phone’s on-screen keyboard. Phone typing is usually slower than a physical keyboard, so your results compare you with the phone average. Autocorrect is switched off where the phone allows it.
Can I correct mistakes?
Yes. Use backspace to fix the word you are typing before you press space. Once you press space, the word is marked right or wrong and you move on, as in most typing tests.
What does capitals and punctuation do?
It adds capital letters at the start of sentences and full stops, commas and question marks, like real writing. It is harder, so scores are usually a little lower.
How do I challenge a friend?
After the test, tap WhatsApp, Messages or Copy link under Challenge a friend. Your friend gets the exact same words and time, and sees who won when they finish.
Is what I type stored?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded. A challenge link only contains your score, the test length and a number that recreates the same words.
How can I type faster?
Learn to touch type with your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;), stop looking at the keys, focus on accuracy before speed and practise for ten minutes a day. Your results list the words you got wrong so you can practise them.
