How to split 1,000 words

One sensible plan is an introduction of about 100 words, three or four body sections of 200 to 250 words each, and a conclusion of about 100 words. That is only a plan: the assignment brief and your argument decide the real shape.

How long does a 1,000-word essay take?

  • To read silently: about 4 minutes (238 words a minute, the average for adult non-fiction from a 2019 review of 190 studies).
  • To say out loud: about 7½ minutes at roughly 130 words a minute, a common rule of thumb for presenting rather than a measured average.
  • To copy out by hand: hours rather than minutes, before any thinking time.

More lengths are in the reading and speaking time table.

Count your words properly

Different programs count differently: some include footnotes, headers or the reference list, and your university may not. Use the count your course asks for, and check it in the program you are submitting from. For a quick independent check, the Altto Word Counter counts words, characters, sentences and reading time as you type.

Common questions

How many pages is a 1,000-word essay?
About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced, at 12pt Times New Roman with 2.54cm margins. With 1.5 line spacing it is about 3 pages. Headings, a title block and a reference list change the real figure.
How many paragraphs is a 1,000-word essay?
Roughly 5 to 7 paragraphs if each runs 100 to 200 words, which is a common rule of thumb rather than a fixed rule. Let each paragraph make one point.
How long does it take to read a 1,000-word essay?
About 4 minutes to read silently at the average adult speed of 238 words a minute, and about 7½ minutes to say out loud at roughly 130 words a minute (a rule of thumb, not a measured average).
How long does it take to write a 1,000-word essay?
It depends far more on research and planning than typing. Copying text out by hand is far slower than reading and takes hours, before any thinking time.
Does the word count include the references and footnotes?
It depends on the course or publisher. Many universities exclude the bibliography but count quotations and some footnotes. Check your assignment brief or course handbook; it overrides any general rule.
How strict is the 1,000-word limit?
Some courses allow a margin either way and others penalise going over; the allowance varies, so check your handbook rather than assuming.
