FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Altto Office really free?
Yes. Every app and tool on this page is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many documents you open or save. Altto is paid for by the ads on its pages.
Do I need an account or to install anything?
No. Everything runs in your web browser on a computer, Chromebook, tablet or phone. Open the page and start; there is nothing to download or sign in to.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Altto’s apps open, edit and save your files on your own device, in the browser tab, so your documents never reach a server. The only exception is the optional AI designer in Altto Layout, which sends the description you type (never a file) to make a design.
Can it replace Microsoft Office?
For everyday work, often yes: writing and editing letters, CVs, essays and reports, making flyers and newsletters, and handling PDFs, with files saved in the formats Office uses. It doesn’t yet do advanced features such as macros, mail merge, tracked changes or a spreadsheet editor, so if you rely on those you’ll still want Office.
Will files I make open in Word?
Yes. Altto Write saves standard Word (.docx) files that open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Apple Pages, and every app can save a PDF that looks the same everywhere.
Is there a spreadsheet or slides editor?
Not yet. For now Altto converts Excel and PowerPoint files to and from PDF (see the tools above). A spreadsheet editor and a slides editor are what we’re working on next.
