Why this runs in your browser, not on a server

Word documents are often drafts, contracts or things you’d rather not hand to a stranger’s server just to change the file format. Altto skips that step completely — there’s no server for it to go to.

Will my formatting be kept?
Headings, bold/italic text, lists and paragraphs carry over well. Very complex layouts — multi-column text, text boxes, tracked changes — may not look identical in the PDF.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No — nothing is ever uploaded. The .docx is read and converted entirely inside this browser tab. There's no server involved at all, so there's nothing for Altto to see, copy or keep.
Does this work with the older .doc format?
Not yet — only the modern .docx format (Word 2007 and later) is supported. Save your file as .docx from Word first if needed.
Can I convert a password-protected document?
No, encrypted Word documents can't be read in the browser. Remove the password in Word first, then convert it here.
Why does the layout shift slightly?
Altto rebuilds the page using web technology rather than Word's own layout engine, so spacing can shift a little on documents with unusual formatting.
Do you keep a copy of my document?
No. There's no upload, so there's nothing on our side to keep. See the Privacy Policy for details.
