How it works

How to convert SVG to PNG

Altto reads each SVG’s own width, height or viewBox, sets the pixel size you asked for, and lets your browser draw it onto a canvas, the same engine that shows SVGs on web pages. The canvas is then saved as a PNG.

01

Add your SVG files

Drop in one SVG or a whole set of icons.

02

Choose size and background

Pick 1×, 2×, 4× or an exact width, and transparent, white or black.

03

Download your PNGs

One file saves directly; several come back as a .zip.

Tips

Getting the PNG size right

SVGs have no fixed resolution, so the size you pick decides how sharp the PNG looks where you use it.

  • For web pages and slidesUse 2×. It looks crisp on high-resolution laptop and phone screens without making huge files.
  • For printWork out pixels from the printed size: width in inches × 300. A logo printed 2 inches wide needs a 600px-wide PNG.
  • For app and site iconsSet an exact width such as 512 or 1024. For a full favicon set, use the Favicon Generator, which makes every size at once.
  • Text looks different? If the SVG uses a font that isn’t on your device, your browser swaps in a similar one. Converting the text to outlines in your design app before exporting the SVG avoids this.

Like every Altto tool, this runs on your device — nothing you add is uploaded. How Altto works

8,000px

is the widest PNG this tool will make from a single SVG, enough for a poster-sized print. Very large sizes are scaled to fit your device’s memory.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How SVG rendering works here and what to expect. Need to resize a PNG later? Use Image Resize.

Will the PNG be blurry?
No, as long as you pick a big enough size. An SVG is drawn from shapes, so it can be rendered sharp at any size; the PNG is a grid of pixels fixed at the size you choose. Use 2× or 4× for screens, or set an exact width in pixels for a specific slot such as an app icon or social image.
How big will my PNG be?
At 1×, it’s the size written into the SVG file (its width and height, or its viewBox if those aren’t set). At 2× and 4× it’s two or four times that. Choose “Set width” to give every file the same pixel width; the height follows automatically so nothing gets squashed.
Can I keep a transparent background?
Yes. Transparent is the default, so anything the SVG doesn’t paint stays see-through in the PNG. Pick White or Black if the image is going somewhere that doesn’t handle transparency well.
Why are some parts missing from my PNG?
Browsers draw SVG files in a safe mode that doesn’t fetch anything from the internet, so pictures or fonts the SVG links to on other websites can’t be included. Shapes, text in common fonts, gradients and embedded images all come through. If text uses a font you don’t have installed, it falls back to a similar one.
Is it safe to open an SVG from someone else?
Here, yes. SVG files can contain scripts, but the image is rendered the same way a browser shows a picture in an <img> tag, where scripts never run. And the file stays on your device the whole time.
What about converting PNG back to SVG?
That’s a different job, called tracing or vectorising, and it only works well for simple logos. This tool goes one way: from SVG’s scalable shapes to a fixed-size PNG.
