How it works

How to convert an image to JPG, PNG or WebP

Your browser opens each image (iPhone HEIC photos use a built-in reader that loads only when you add one), draws it at the size you choose and saves it again in the format you pick.

01

Add your images

Drop in one image or a whole folder, in any mix of formats.

02

Pick a format and size

JPG, PNG or WebP, the quality, and whether to resize.

03

Download

One image saves directly; several come back as a .zip.

Tips

Which format and size to choose

The right choice depends on where the image is going.

  • Photos for email or forms? JPG at High, fit within 1600 pixelsThat keeps a phone photo sharp on any screen while cutting it to a few hundred KB, small enough for most upload forms and email limits.
  • Screenshots and logos: choose PNGPNG keeps text and hard edges crisp and keeps transparent backgrounds. JPG would blur the edges and fill the transparency with white.
  • Images for a website: choose WebPWebP files are usually much smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality, so pages load faster. All current browsers show WebP.
  • Got a mixed folder? Do it in one goDrop in iPhone HEIC photos, WebP downloads and PNG screenshots together. Everything comes out in the one format you pick, in a single .zip.

Like every Altto tool, this runs on your device — nothing you add is uploaded. How Altto works

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What to expect when you convert images here. For the difference between the two most common formats, see JPG vs PNG.

Which image formats can I convert?
Anything your browser can open, plus iPhone photos: JPG and JPEG (including .jfif), PNG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF, AVIF, GIF (the first frame), BMP, ICO and SVG. Recent Safari also opens TIFF and JPEG XL. You can save each one as JPG, PNG or WebP.
Which format should I choose?
JPG for photos and anything you upload or email, because it opens everywhere and keeps files small. PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency or sharp text. WebP for websites: it gives the smallest files and keeps transparency, but some older apps can’t open it.
Can I resize while converting?
Yes. Choose Fit within and enter the largest width or height you want (for example 1600 pixels), or Percent to scale every image by the same amount. Images smaller than the limit are left at their own size.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Each image is opened, converted and saved inside your browser tab, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so nobody else sees your photos.
Does it keep the photo date, camera and location?
No. The new files don’t carry over the hidden details stored in the original, such as the date taken, camera model and GPS location. That’s useful before sharing a photo publicly; keep your originals if you sort your library by date.
Can I convert lots of images at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like and they’re converted one after another. One image downloads on its own; several come back together in a .zip.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG can’t store it, so transparent areas are filled with white.
Why use this instead of the single converters?
It’s the same engine with every option in one place: mix formats in one batch, pick any output and resize in the same step. The single converters, such as HEIC to JPG or SVG to PNG, stay for quick one-job conversions and a few special options, like converting JFIF to JPG with no quality loss at all.
