How it works

How to convert JFIF to JPG

Altto reads the first few bytes of each file. A real JFIF file starts with the JPEG marker, so it’s saved straight back out with a .jpg name. Anything else is decoded by your browser and re-saved as a JPG.

01

Add your .jfif files

Drop in one file or a whole batch. They stay on your device.

02

Choose whether to keep photo details

Leave the box unticked to keep the file exactly as it is, or tick it to strip camera, date and location data.

03

Download your JPGs

One file downloads on its own; a batch comes back as a single .zip.

Tips

Getting rid of JFIF for good

A converter fixes the files you already have. These tips stop new ones turning up.

  • Type .jpg in the save boxWhen your browser offers to save an image as .jfif, change the ending to .jpg before you click Save. The file inside is identical, so nothing breaks.
  • Check where it came fromJFIF files almost always come from “Save image as” in a web browser on Windows. Photos straight from a phone or camera are saved as .jpg or .heic instead.
  • Strip details before postingPhotos you download can still carry the original camera details. Tick the box above to remove them before you share or upload the file anywhere public.
  • Need a smaller file?Converting doesn’t change the size. If a form rejects the photo for being too big, run the JPG through Compress Image, which can aim for an exact size in KB.

Like every Altto tool, this runs on your device — nothing you add is uploaded. How Altto works

JFIF, JPG and JPEG: what’s the difference?

They’re three names for the same kind of image. The difference is only in the file name.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The short version: a JFIF is a JPEG with an unusual name. For other conversions, see WebP to JPG and HEIC to JPG.

What is a JFIF file?
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It’s the standard way a JPEG photo is packaged, so a .jfif file is a JPEG with a less familiar name on the end. Windows sometimes saves images copied from a browser as .jfif, which is why the extension pops up out of nowhere.
Does converting JFIF to JPG lose quality?
Not here. Because a JFIF file is already a JPEG inside, Altto checks the file’s first bytes and, when they’re JPEG, simply saves the same data under a .jpg name. Not a single pixel is re-compressed. Only a file that turns out to be a different format renamed to .jfif gets re-saved, at high quality.
Can I just rename the file to .jpg myself?
Usually, yes, and that’s exactly what this tool does for genuine JFIF files. It’s handy when you have a batch to do, when your computer hides file extensions, or when you’re not sure the file is really a JPEG: the tool checks each one and only re-saves files that need it.
Why does Windows save pictures as JFIF?
It comes down to a Windows setting that links the image/jpeg file type to the .jfif extension, so some browsers pick .jfif when you choose “Save image as”. You can keep using this tool, or change the extension in the save box to .jpg before saving.
Will the photo’s date and location stay in the file?
By default the file is kept exactly as it was, details included. Tick “Also remove hidden photo details” and the camera model, date taken and any GPS location are stripped out before you download, without touching the picture.
Is there a limit on how many files I can convert?
No. Add as many as you like; one file downloads on its own and several come back together in a .zip. Because the files never leave your device, there’s no upload queue or daily cap.
