How it works

How to convert AVIF to JPG

Your browser decodes each AVIF image with its built-in AV1 decoder, draws it onto a canvas at full size, and saves it again as a JPG or PNG. Width and height stay exactly the same.

01

Add your AVIF images

Drop in one or many .avif files.

02

Pick JPG or PNG

JPG for photos and uploads; PNG when you need transparency.

03

Download

One image saves directly; several come back as a .zip.

Tips

Choosing the right output

AVIF is great for websites but awkward almost everywhere else. Here’s how to get the most useful file back.

  • Photos: JPG at HighHigh quality is visually identical to the original for nearly every photo and opens in every app, email and upload form.
  • Logos and cut-outs: PNGIf the image has a see-through background, PNG keeps it. JPG would put a white box behind it.
  • Hitting an upload limitJPG files are larger than AVIF. If a form caps the size, use Compress Image afterwards and set a target such as 200KB.
  • Stop getting AVIF filesSome browsers let you copy an image and paste it into another app, which often gives a PNG instead. Otherwise converting here is the quickest fix.

Like every Altto tool, this runs on your device — nothing you add is uploaded. How Altto works

~50%

is roughly how much smaller an AVIF photo can be than a JPG of similar quality, which is why websites like it and why your converted JPG may be bigger than the file you started with.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How AVIF conversion works on your device. Have WebP or HEIC files too? Try WebP to JPG or HEIC to JPG.

What is an AVIF file?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It squeezes photos into much smaller files than JPG at similar quality, which is why more websites now serve images as AVIF. The catch is that plenty of apps, upload forms and older software still can’t open it.
Why are my downloaded images AVIF?
When you save a picture from a website, you get whatever format the site sent to your browser. Many sites send AVIF to browsers that support it because it loads faster, so “Save image as” gives you an .avif file even though the page looked like any other photo.
Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?
Usually, yes, often two to four times bigger, because JPG is a less efficient format. That’s normal and the picture won’t look worse. If you need a smaller JPG, pick “Smaller file”, or run the result through Compress Image with a target size.
Does it keep transparency?
Choose PNG to keep transparent areas exactly as they are. JPG has no transparency, so any see-through parts are filled with white.
My browser says it can’t open AVIF. What now?
The conversion uses your browser’s own image decoder, so it needs a browser that understands AVIF: Chrome 85 or later, Firefox 93 or later, Edge 121 or later, or Safari 16.4 or later. Updating your browser fixes it; nothing is ever sent elsewhere to convert.
Are HDR or animated AVIF files supported?
Animated AVIF files convert to a still image of the first frame. HDR images are converted to standard range by your browser, so very bright highlights may look a little flatter.
