How it works

How to convert JPEG XL to JPG

Each image is decoded on your device, by your browser if it already understands JPEG XL or otherwise by a JPEG XL decoder that loads into this page, then saved again as a JPG or PNG at exactly the same width and height.

01

Add your .jxl images

Drop in one or many JPEG XL files.

02

Pick JPG or PNG

JPG for photos and uploads; PNG when you need transparency or every pixel kept.

03

Download

One image saves directly; several come back as a .zip.

Tips

Getting the most from your JPEG XL files

JPEG XL is excellent for storing photos but still awkward to share. Here’s how to get a useful file back.

  • Photos: JPG at HighHigh quality looks the same as the original for nearly every photo and opens in every app, email and upload form.
  • Logos and cut-outs: PNGIf the image has a see-through background, PNG keeps it. JPG would put a white box behind it.
  • Keep the .jxl as wellJPEG XL files are small and high quality, so keep the original for your archive and send the JPG to other people.
  • Hitting an upload limitJPG files are larger than JPEG XL. If a form caps the size, use Compress Image afterwards and aim for a size such as 200KB.

Like every Altto tool, this runs on your device — nothing you add is uploaded. How Altto works

~20%

is how much smaller a normal JPG gets when it’s repacked as JPEG XL with no change to the picture at all, one reason photographers and websites are starting to use it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How JPEG XL conversion works on your device. Have AVIF, WebP or HEIC files too? Try AVIF to JPG, WebP to JPG or HEIC to JPG.

What is a JPEG XL (.jxl) file?
JPEG XL is a newer image format from the JPEG committee, the same group behind the ordinary JPG. It makes smaller files than JPG at the same quality, can be lossless, supports transparency and HDR, and can repack an existing JPG about 20% smaller without changing a single pixel. Files end in .jxl.
Why can’t I open my .jxl file?
Support is still arriving. Chrome only started opening JPEG XL in version 155 (October 2026), Firefox keeps it behind a setting, and Windows needs an extra extension from the Microsoft Store. Most upload forms, email apps, Office and older phones still don’t accept it, so converting to JPG is the quickest fix.
Does this work if my browser can’t open JPEG XL?
Yes. If your browser already understands JPEG XL, Altto uses it. If it doesn’t, the page loads a JPEG XL decoder (about 850 KB, built from the official libjxl library) and decodes the image on your device instead. Either way, the image is never uploaded.
Should I choose JPG or PNG?
JPG for photos you want to email, upload or print: it opens everywhere and stays a reasonable size. PNG if the image has a transparent background, or if it was a lossless JPEG XL and you want to keep every pixel exactly.
Will the JPG be bigger than the JXL file?
Usually, yes. JPEG XL packs images more tightly than JPG, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG. That’s normal and it won’t look worse. If an upload form has a size limit, run the result through Compress Image and set a target such as 200KB.
Can it get back the original JPG that was packed into a JXL?
Not byte for byte. Some JPEG XL files are a JPG repacked losslessly, and special tools can unpack those to the exact original file. This converter instead saves a fresh, high-quality JPG of the same picture, which looks the same and works for every normal use.
Are animated or HDR JPEG XL files supported?
Animated JPEG XL files are converted to a still image of the first frame. HDR and 16-bit images are converted to standard 8-bit colour, so very bright highlights may look a little flatter.
