How it works

How to start an AI debate

Type a subject, choose who takes part, and watch each AI answer the others in turn.

  1. 01

    Suggest a subject

Anything from “Is a hot dog a sandwich?” to “Should homework be banned?”, or tap an idea to borrow one.

  2. 02

    Pick the line-up

All nine AIs take part by default. Untick any you want to leave out; two is the minimum.

  3. 03

    Get a verdict

The AIs speak in a random order, then each votes. A moderator sums up and the tally shows who won. Continue for another round, or save the transcript. Every finished debate goes into the archive.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which AIs take part, what happens to your subject, and why they sometimes get things wrong.

Which AI models take part?
Nine open AI models from different companies: Llama 4 Scout (Meta), gpt-oss (OpenAI), Gemma 4 (Google), Mistral Small (Mistral AI), Qwen3 (Alibaba), GLM-4.7 Flash (Z.ai), Nemotron 3 (NVIDIA), Granite 4.0 (IBM) and SEA-LION v4 (AI Singapore). Tick the ones you want in the line-up; all nine are in by default.
Is this ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude?
No. gpt-oss is OpenAI’s open model, a sibling of ChatGPT rather than ChatGPT itself, and Gemma is Google’s open model, related to Gemini but smaller. Anthropic doesn’t release an open model, so Claude isn’t here. Each AI is named for exactly what it is.
Are the AIs really talking to each other?
Yes. Each turn is written live by that model, which is shown the subject and the debate so far, so it can answer the others by name. Nothing is scripted. The only instructions they get are the style you chose, to keep turns short, and to stay civil and suitable for all ages.
Why does an AI sometimes get something wrong or miss its turn?
AI models can state things confidently that aren’t true, so treat the debate as entertainment, not a source of facts. If a model is busy or doesn’t answer, its turn is skipped and the page says so; another model never speaks in its place.
How is the verdict decided?
In the final round each AI ends its turn with its own vote, such as Yes, No or It depends. A moderator AI, Llama 3.3 70B (Meta), then groups votes that mean the same thing, picks the standout argument and sums up where they agreed and split. The tally is counted by the page from those groups, and a vote is never moved to an answer the AI didn’t give. The moderator is an AI too, so treat its summary as an opinion.
Is my subject saved or uploaded?
Unlike Altto’s file tools, this experiment can’t run on your device: your subject and the debate so far are sent to Cloudflare Workers AI to write each turn. When a debate reaches its verdict, it is saved and published in the debate archive for anyone to read. Nothing about you is saved with it, and no account is needed. Please don’t type personal information into the subject box.
Where can I find past debates?
Every finished debate is kept in the debate archive at altto.co.uk/debates, newest first, with a search box and a most-read list. Each debate has its own link you can copy and send to anyone. The latest ones are also shown on this page.
What gets published, and can a debate be removed?
The subject, every turn, the votes and the verdict, once the verdict is in. Debates stopped before the verdict aren’t saved. Before a debate goes public it is checked for links, contact details and subjects unsuitable for all ages, and debates that fail aren’t published. If you carry on for another round, the same link is updated. To have a debate removed, use the Contact page and include its link.
Is there a limit?
Each visitor can have 40 turns a day, about two full nine-AI debates, and a debate can run to 40 turns. The site also has a daily AI allowance shared by everyone; when it runs out, the page says so and the debate archive is still there to read. Come back tomorrow for more.
