How it works

How to open an e-invoice

For a PDF, Altto looks for the e-invoice XML attached inside it; for an XML file it reads it directly. It understands both EN 16931 formats (UN/CEFACT CII and UBL) and lays the data out as a normal invoice.

01

Add the invoice

Drop in the .xml file, or the Factur-X / ZUGFeRD PDF.

02

Read it

See the seller, buyer, every line, the VAT breakdown and what to pay.

03

Save it

Keep a readable PDF for your records, or the lines as a spreadsheet.

Tips

Handling e-invoices from EU customers and suppliers

A few things worth knowing when invoices start arriving as data rather than documents.

  • Keep the original fileThe XML (or the Factur-X PDF) is the legal invoice. A readable PDF is handy, but store the original too.
  • Check the hidden dataWith Factur-X and ZUGFeRD, the buyer’s software reads the attached XML, not the picture of the invoice. Make sure the two say the same thing.
  • Leitweg-IDGerman public-sector invoices carry a Leitweg-ID as the buyer reference; it’s shown under “Buyer reference”.
  • Need to make invoices?Altto’s Invoice Generator makes ordinary PDF invoices; EU e-invoices need software that writes the XML.

Like every Altto tool, this runs on your device — nothing you add is uploaded. How Altto works

is when every company in France had to be able to receive e-invoices. Germany has required businesses to accept them since January 2025.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Reading EU e-invoices on your own device. Need a normal invoice instead? Try the Invoice Generator.

What is an e-invoice?
An e-invoice is an invoice in a structured, machine-readable format (XML), so accounting software can read it without retyping. In Europe they follow the EN 16931 standard. Some are plain XML files (XRechnung, UBL/Peppol); others, called Factur-X in France and ZUGFeRD in Germany, are normal-looking PDFs with the XML attached inside.
How do I open an XRechnung or UBL .xml file?
Drop it onto this page. Altto turns the XML into a readable invoice showing the seller, buyer, lines, VAT, totals and bank details, and can save it as a PDF. Opening the XML in a browser or text editor just shows code.
What’s inside a Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF?
The PDF you see is the human-readable copy; attached inside it is an XML file (factur-x.xml or zugferd-invoice.xml) with the same invoice as data. Altto pulls out that attachment and shows what it actually says, which is what the buyer’s software will read, so you can check the two match.
Why am I getting e-invoices now?
France requires every company to be able to receive e-invoices from 1 September 2026, with the largest firms sending them first. Germany has required businesses to accept them since January 2025, and Belgium’s Peppol mandate started in January 2026. UK businesses with EU customers or suppliers increasingly see these files.
What do the checks mean?
Altto adds up the lines, the VAT breakdown and the totals, and flags any that don’t match. It also warns about the MINIMUM and BASIC WL profiles, which carry no invoice lines and aren’t accepted as e-invoices in Germany. It isn’t a full legal validation against every EN 16931 rule.
Is the invoice uploaded?
No. The invoice is read in this browser tab, on your device. That matters because invoices contain bank details and prices; there’s no server on our side to send them to.
