Why your document never leaves your device

Online translators usually send your whole document to their servers. Altto translates inside your browser: in recent desktop Chrome and Edge we use the browser’s built-in translator, and elsewhere your browser downloads a compact translation model for the languages you choose.

Will it run on my device?

Because the AI runs on your own device instead of on a server, your computer does the work — that’s what keeps your files private. Most computers from the last few years are fine, but a more powerful one is noticeably faster.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work on my computer or phone?
Most computers from the last few years run it fine. Because the AI runs on your own device, a more powerful computer is faster. See minimum and recommended specs, including a quick check of your device.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The text is read and translated inside this browser tab and is never sent to Altto or to a translation company.
Which languages can it translate?
English, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Welsh. Some pairs are translated through English, which can make them a little less natural. In browsers without a built-in translator (such as Safari and Firefox), translating into Greek, Hebrew, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish or Welsh isn’t available yet — use Chrome or Edge on a computer for those.
What gets downloaded?
Only the translation model. In recent desktop Chrome or Edge we use the browser’s built-in translator. Elsewhere your browser downloads a model of roughly 100 MB for each language pair the first time, then keeps it.
Does it keep my formatting?
It keeps headings and paragraphs. Tables, images and page layout aren’t carried over — you get a clean Word document with the translated text.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
It needs the PDF to contain real text. Convert a scanned PDF with our PDF to Word tool first (it reads scans), then translate the Word file.
Is it good enough for official documents?
Machine translation is great for understanding a document or a first draft, but for legal, medical or official use have it checked by a qualified translator.
