How it works

How to convert an Excel file to CSV

The workbook is opened by SheetJS, a spreadsheet library running inside this page. Each cell is written out as the value you see in Excel, separated by your chosen character, one row per line.

01

Add your workbook

Drop in an .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm or .ods file and see a preview.

02

Pick the sheet and separator

Choose one sheet or all of them, then comma, semicolon or tab.

03

Download the CSV

One sheet saves as a .csv; all sheets come back as a .zip.

Tips

Tips for a CSV that imports first time

Most import errors come down to a handful of things in the spreadsheet, not the conversion.

  • One header row, no titles above itImport tools expect the column names on the very first line. Delete any report titles, logos or blank rows above the headers before converting.
  • Unmerge cells firstMerged cells have no CSV equivalent: the value lands in the first cell and the rest come out empty. Unmerge and fill them in Excel if every row needs the value.
  • Keep leading zerosPhone numbers and codes like 007 lose their zeros if Excel stored them as numbers. Format the column as Text in Excel and re-type them, and the zeros will come through.
  • Going the other way?To turn a CSV into data for a web app, see CSV to JSON. To share a sheet so it can’t be edited, use Excel to PDF.

Like every Altto tool, this runs on your device — nothing you add is uploaded. How Altto works

sheet per CSV. CSV is plain text with no tabs or pages, which is exactly why almost every system can import it.

Separators

Which separator should I choose?

Pick the one the system you’re importing into expects. If it doesn’t say, comma is the safe default.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What carries over to CSV and what doesn’t. For a different direction, try JSON to CSV.

Does it convert every sheet?
A CSV file can only hold one sheet, so you choose which one. If the workbook has several sheets, pick “All sheets” from the list to get one CSV per sheet, packed together in a .zip.
Are formulas kept?
CSV holds plain values only, so each formula is saved as the result Excel last calculated, the same number you see in the cell. Formatting, colours, charts and merged cells don’t exist in CSV and are left out.
Why do £ signs and accents look broken when I open the CSV in Excel?
Excel guesses the text encoding of a CSV and often guesses wrong. Keeping the “Make £, € and accented letters show correctly” box ticked adds a small UTF-8 marker at the start of the file that tells Excel how to read it. Leave it unticked only if a system you’re importing into complains about the first column name.
Comma or semicolon?
Use comma for most systems and for anyone in the UK or US. Choose semicolon if the CSV will be opened in Excel set to a European region, where the comma is used as a decimal point, or if the system you’re importing into asks for it. Tab gives a TSV-style file that copes well with commas inside text.
How are dates saved?
Dates and numbers are written the way they’re displayed in the sheet, so 05/10/2026 stays 05/10/2026 and £1,234.50 stays as shown. If you need a fixed format such as 2026-10-05, set that number format in Excel before converting.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The workbook is opened by a spreadsheet library running inside this page, and the CSV is created on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, which matters for payroll, customer lists and anything else confidential.
