How it works

How to turn a .pub file into JPG or PNG pictures

Microsoft retired Publisher in October 2026, so many people no longer have a way to open their .pub files. Altto draws the pages for you.

Updated

01

Drop in your .pub file

Choose the file or drag it onto the box above. It is read on your device and never uploaded.

02

Pick JPG or PNG

JPG makes smaller files for sharing and posting. PNG keeps text and flat colours sharper.

03

Download the pages

One page gives you one picture. A longer publication gives you every page in a single ZIP.

Altto reads where each box, picture and shape sits on the page, and its text with fonts, sizes and colours, then draws the page. Look the result over before you rely on it: unusual fonts and effects Altto cannot read yet can differ a little. To change something first, open the file in Altto Layout.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a .pub file to JPG without Publisher?
Yes. Drop the .pub file on this page. Altto reads it in your browser, draws each page with its text, pictures and shapes where they were, and gives you the pages as JPG or PNG pictures. You do not need Publisher or an account.
Is my Publisher file uploaded?
No. The file is opened and converted on your own device, in this browser tab. Nothing is sent to Altto or anyone else.
Will the picture look like my Publisher page?
Close, but not always identical. Altto draws the page from the layout stored in the file, using free fonts with the same measurements as common Office fonts. Unusual fonts, and effects Altto cannot read yet, may differ a little, so check the result.
What if my publication has several pages?
Each page becomes its own picture. If there is more than one, you get them together in one ZIP file.
JPG or PNG: which should I choose?
Choose JPG for photos and pages you want to share or post: the files are smaller. Choose PNG for sharp text and flat colours, or if you may edit the picture further.
Does it work with old .pub files?
Files from Publisher 2002 and later open with their layout. Files from Publisher 2000 or older, and damaged or password-protected files, may only give you their text, or may not open.
Can I change the .pub file before I make the pictures?
Yes. After opening the file, choose Edit in Altto Layout, make your changes, then use File and Download pages as JPG pictures.
